Expertise matters

Women deserve psychiatric care that understands reproductive biology.

Psychiatric symptoms can emerge, intensify, or change during pregnancy, postpartum, the menstrual cycle, infertility treatment, perimenopause, and menopause. These situations often require a more nuanced approach than standard psychiatric care.

Meet Alison Reminick, MD

Board-Certified Psychiatrist specializing in Reproductive Psychiatry & Women’s Mental Health

I have specialized in women’s mental health for more than two decades, and I continue to feel deeply privileged to care for women during some of the most meaningful, complex, and vulnerable transitions of their lives.

My practice focuses on the intersection of reproductive biology and mental health—from the menstrual cycle and fertility treatment through pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, and menopause. I have particular expertise in premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), infertility and pregnancy loss, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, psychiatric medication management during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and mood and anxiety symptoms associated with perimenopause and menopause.

My approach is thoughtful, collaborative, and grounded in evidence. I believe good psychiatric care requires more than identifying symptoms and prescribing medication. It means understanding the whole clinical picture: a woman’s psychiatric history, reproductive and hormonal history, relationships, life circumstances, treatment goals, and individual preferences.

I received my medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and completed psychiatric training at Massachusetts General Hospital/McLean Hospital and UCLA, with specialized experience in women’s mental health.

From 2012–2015, I served as Director of Women’s Mental Health at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. In 2015, I joined UC San Diego, where I founded and directed the Women’s Reproductive Mental Health Program for more than a decade. In addition to caring for patients, I taught and supervised medical students, psychiatry residents, and fellows in reproductive psychiatry.

My academic work has focused on reproductive and perinatal mental health, and I have co-authored peer-reviewed publications appearing in journals including The American Journal of Psychiatry, JAMA, and Women’s Health.

After more than two decades in academic medicine, I now bring that experience to a private practice designed to allow for something that can be difficult to achieve in larger health systems: time to listen carefully, understand the full clinical picture, and develop a nuanced and highly individualized treatment plan.

A thoughtful approach to complex decisions

“Good reproductive psychiatric care requires understanding the evidence — and then applying that evidence thoughtfully to the individual person.”

Many patients arrive after receiving dramatically different recommendations about psychiatric medications, pregnancy, hormones, or treatment. There is often no single universally correct answer. The goal is to understand the evidence, the individual, and the context well enough to make a thoughtful decision together.
